Canalith

Vertigo diary for iPhone and Apple Watch

When the room spins, log it in one motion.

Severity is one drag on the dial. Canalith adds the barometric pressure and weather at that moment, keeps the diary, guides the exercise your clinician prescribed, and prints a one-page report for your next appointment.

Move your cursor. The sky in the window follows a sample month.

Four rooms, one diary.

Each part of Canalith is a painted room with a working instrument in it. The interface is the picture.

Today: the bedroom, with a spiral dial in the round window showing one day clear
TodayThe spiral tightens as the month gets rougher. The sky in the window turns stormy with it.
Logging an episode: the dial in the window set to five, moderate
LogDrag the ring from 1 to 10. Symptoms and triggers are a tap. Pressure and weather are recorded for you.
Diary: a sheet of paper pinned to a wall showing eight weeks as a calendar
DiaryEight weeks on a sheet pinned to the wall. Tap a day to see what happened.
Exercises: a physiotherapy room with a figure demonstrating on the bed
ExercisesEpley, Semont, Brandt-Daroff and the half somersault, timed and spoken, with a figure on the bed showing each position.
A guided session: the countdown glows in the window while the figure holds a position
Guided sessionThe hold countdown is the light in the window. A haptic and a spoken cue mark each change.
Patterns: a study with a barometer whose needle points at the average pressure at onset
PatternsThe barometer reads your diary. The notepad names the pattern with the most evidence.

The pressure is recorded so you never have to remember it.

Falling barometric pressure is a common trigger for vestibular migraine and a frequent companion to Meniere's. Each time you log an episode, Canalith asks your phone where it is, once, and writes down the pressure, its trend, and the weather. After a few weeks the Patterns room tells you plainly what share of your attacks began in low or falling pressure.

Captured with each episode

Pressure in hPa, rising or falling, temperature, humidity and conditions. Optionally, last night's sleep from Health.

From your wrist

On Apple Watch, severity is the crown and symptoms are four taps. The phone attaches the weather when the episode arrives.

Correlations, not conclusions

Canalith reports frequencies in your own log. It does not diagnose and it does not guess at causes.

The exercise your clinician prescribed, done properly.

Repositioning maneuvers are shown only after you confirm a clinician prescribed one for you and told you which. Canalith then walks you through it at the hold times in the published protocols, with left and right ear variants, a moving figure, a countdown, haptics and a voice.

Epley

Canalith repositioning for posterior canal BPPV. Epley 1992; guided per the 2017 AAO-HNSF clinical practice guideline.

Semont

Liberatory maneuver for posterior canal BPPV. Semont, Freyss and Vitte 1988.

Brandt-Daroff

Habituation exercise, repeated in sets as prescribed. Brandt and Daroff 1980.

Half somersault

Self-treatment alternative to Epley. Foster and colleagues 2012.

Canalith is a diary and a guide, not a medical device. It does not diagnose or treat vertigo. Stop and rest if symptoms worsen, and contact your clinician if the vertigo changes character or comes with hearing loss, weakness, double vision or trouble speaking.

A one-page report your clinician can read in a minute.

Frequency, average severity, what accompanied each episode, the pressure at onset, medication noted, and the exercises you performed. As a PDF for the appointment or a CSV for anyone who wants the raw rows.

Everything stays on your phone

There is no account and no server. Episodes live in the iPhone's own storage and on the paired watch. WeatherKit requests are made by Apple's framework on your behalf and carry no identifier. The App Store privacy label reads Data Not Collected.

Free to log. Pro for the rest.
